Inspiration: When the seasons began to change in late September, our Warehouse got a tiny bit colder. Our Warehouse worker, Noron, usually has lunch by herself as her co-worker Aislin tends to leave for lunch. One day in late September, she swears she saw a shadow of a person and was asking if someone was there. Nobody was there. There is a reel about it on our social media pages.
Passing through our Community, I noticed a mural of ‘The Hoof Lady,’ also known as ‘The Deer Lady’ in the center of town. It had actually been there for awhile but I just noticed now. The mural was adjacent to a local business called “Thrifting the Night Away,” which is owned by a married couple in which the woman is from my home Community of Akwesasne. We joked with Noron after seeing this mural and suggested that maybe she’s seeing the shadows of The Hoof Lady.
When October arrived, my neighbors began putting out their Halloween ornaments and one neighbor in particular has some that look like real people, full sized and all. You’d think they came to life, especially at night. I had work late one evening and I was making a new batch of soap for a late October launch. I made a woodsy scented soap inspired by this time of year and representing our changing seasons. On my way to Sequoia Production, I could see the shadows of my neighbors life sized yard ornaments and got a bit spooked. I thought someone was staring at me.
When we unmolded the blocks of this new soap, there were tiny dents that our Assistant highlighted with bronze, saying they looked like hoof prints. After cutting the block into bars of soap, the very first bar I looked at had what looked like a hoof very prominent within the soap colors. Sometimes our soaps come out like pieces of art and look like things but I’ve never seen one that looks like a hoof. We shared these images on Social Media.
In early October, there was an Art Exhibit in Kahnawake and one of the first pieces when you walked in was a ‘Deer Lady’ on wood. We shared a photo of this artwork on Social Media.
Not long after, our Warehouse worker Noron again reported a mysterious occurrence during lunch at the Warehouse. This time, she heard someone calling her but nobody was there. She looked everywhere for the source. There is also a video on our pages about this too.
So here I am earlier this week thinking there is too much going on and just so I dont make her angry, I am instead going to honor the Hoof Lady or Deer Lady and just name my new soap after her. I truly hope she loves the scent and I hope you do too. Each bar comes with embedded small hoof prints. This is my tribute to the Hoof Lady story that lives on in Haudenosaunee culture and I hope she leaves us alone now that we’ve honored her.
